In 1984 he obtained a diploma of technology in Occupational Health and Safety from the British Columbia Institute of Technology joining the Division of Epidemiology, Biometry and Occupational Epidemiology of the BC Cancer Agency participating case-control and cohorts studies in general industry, aluminum reduction, and pulp and paper. In 1992 he obtained a Bachelor Of Science from The Montana School Of Mines In Occupational Health And Safety. In 1994, he became certified in the practice of industrial hygiene (CIH) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and joined the Worker's Compensation Board of British Columbia. There he worked as a hygiene and safety inspector in multiple industries’. With the outbreak of SARS-1 in 2003, he joined the SARS Scientific Committee on behalf of WorkSafeBC. He spent five years as a Fatalities Investigator, investigating over 35 workplace fatalities. In 2010, he received an Master of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Management from Royal Roads University. He conducted his thesis on the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake with field investigation in Sichuan China under the auspices of the Chengdu University of Technology. His thesis was titled “Evaluation of China's Earthquake Disaster Management Systems”. From 2010 to 2019, he managed Hygiene-Safety-Social programs for large Chinese construction companies building hydro-electric dams and industrial infrastructure in China, Indonesia, Fiji, and in the Sahel region of Africa. At the first signs of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in China developing into an international pandemic in January 2020, he began collaborating with the American Industrial Hygiene Association, Workplace Health Without Borders, and multiple ad-hoc organizations promoting safe work procedures in the health care industry, especially the scientific discipline of small particle physics to encourage the use of respirators to prevent exposure to infectious bio-aerosols. His latest employment was as a COVID-19 Compliance Officer in the film industry. Ferguson - 2022 AIHA BC Yukon AGM Feature Speaker Sherri Ferguson, MSc Sherri Ferguson is the current Director of the Environmental Medicine and Physiology Unit at Simon Fraser University, and has been with the lab since 2007. She holds a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Physiology, her research focuses on hyperbaric physiology and the effects of increased gas pressures on the cardiovascular system. The lab houses Canada’s only civilian hyper/hypobaric research facility in an educational institution. In addition to academic research and industry contracts the lab is accredited by the Divers Certification Board of Canada for certification of chamber operators for both clinical and diving/tunneling operations and offers training for hyperbaric safety officers. She is the current Vice-Chair of the CSA Z275 Technical Committee for the series of standards for diving and hyperbaric operations. She has chaired the sub-committee on work in hyperbaric and compressed air environments since 2013. As Chair she has attended the ASME PVHO committee meetings representing the CSA and liaises with the NFPA standard for hyperbaric operations. She has served as a member of the Safety Committee for the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) since 2014. She is a current executive member on the board of directors of the Canadian Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Association (CUHMA). Among her awards received is the James Wilson award and a special recognition award for her service to CUHMA. She is was the recipient of the Paul Baker award for contributions to hyperbaric safety from the UHMS. Larry started his non-profit career at the Adhesive and Sealant Council, a trade association representing adhesive and sealant manufacturers, and was promoted to his first CEO role there in January 2005. He led this group for five years. Larry began his career as a chemical engineer at Air Products and later worked for Nalco Chemical Company in marketing, manufacturing, and sales capacities. Larry earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and later graduated from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management where he earned his MBA. Gates - 2023 AIHA BC Yukon AGM Feature Speaker Dr. Byron Gates Presentation Topic Enhancing the Utility of Wipe Sampling in the Workplace Presentation Brief Description Wipe sampling offers a simple means of collecting residues of interest from a myriad of workplaces for further analysis. The collection of samples using a combination of wipe materials, solvents, wiping modalities, and methods of analyzing the collected residue offer a relatively simple approach to assessing potential workplace exposures. This sampling is widely used for assessing exposures to heavy metals and hazardous chemicals, which can include species from drugs used in the management of cancer to heavy metals that can induce lung fibrosis, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. The workplaces of interest can, thus, span from hospitals and clinics to construction and manufacturing to production and processing of advanced materials (e.g., those enabling clean energy technologies). Biography Byron Gates is a Professor of materials chemistry and surface science at Simon Fraser University (SFU). His interdisciplinary team is creating advanced materials and techniques for a variety of applications through collaboration with researchers around the world. Significant developments include preparation of designer syntheses of nanoscale materials, new methods for tuning surface chemistry of materials including battery materials, on command release of small molecules from nanoparticles, and enhancing electrocatalytic performance of materials used in clean energy production and utilization. The team has also created techniques for tracking nanomaterials in the workplace and in the natural environment and has been establishing best practices for handling engineered nanomaterials. Professor Gates completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry and Nanotechnology at the University of Washington while working with Professor Younan Xia. Prior to joining SFU in 2004, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University with Professor George M. Whitesides. He served as a Director and co-founder of 4D LABS, overseeing the establishment of an extensive Class 100 clean room and materials characterization facility, an extensive suite of electron microscopy tools, and fuel cell testing services. He has also designed and implemented a series of new approaches to undergraduate training in the analytical sciences in preparation for careers in both research and development settings. Many countries have identified REEs as critical minerals essential to economic security and transition to a clean energy economy. The early assessment of risks, and adoption of best practices to limit harmful exposures will help contribute to the safe and responsible extraction of REEs. This session will focus on risk assessments of exposures to ionizing radiation from the co-occurrence of uranium and thorium in REE ore and REE particulate. Novel approaches are required due to the lack of published occupational exposure limits (OELs) for REE, and insufficient legislative limits for ionizing radiation in for REE mines in some jurisdictions. Topics to be presented are: 1) exposure assessment strategies for airborne REE particulate and ionizing radiation; 2) recommended risk management strategies; 3) guidance standards; 4) assumptions and limitations of the standards and assessment strategies; and 5) sharing experiences from conducting baseline risk assessments. Baker - 2024 AIHA BC Yukon AGM Feature Speaker Marissa Baker, PhD Presentation Topic “An Industrial Hygiene Assessment of fentanyl and methamphetamine on public transit in the Pacific Northwest, USA” Presentation Brief Description Prompted by transit employee concerns, University of Washington (Seattle) researchers undertook an exposure assessment for fentanyl and methamphetamine on transit vehicles in the Pacific Northwest (USA). Researchers collected and air surface samples from a total of 11 buses and 19 train cars. In this talk, Dr. Baker will describe the methods and findings from this study, recommendations that were made to participating transit agencies, and outline challenges and needs for ongoing work in this space. Biography Marissa Baker, PhD is an Assistant Professor of occupational health in the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle, WA. Trained as an industrial hygienist, Dr. Baker has expertise in workplace exposure assessment, using techniques including air and surface sampling, biomonitoring, employee surveys, and exposure modeling. Specifically, in proximity to safe inhalation sites. We developed and validated a sampling and analysis method which can be used for this purpose as well as investigated a pilot field application of this method. Biography Matty Jeronimo is an analytical chemist focused on field and analytical methods for occupational and environmental hazards. Svirchev - 2024 AIHA BC Yukon AGM Feature Speaker Laurence Svirchev, CIH Presentation Topic “Preventing Vision Loss from Occupation: Findings from a Report by the International Labour Organization” Presentation Brief Description Clear and accurate vision is an essential precondition for the vast majority of workers to accomplish almost all tasks. It doesn’t matter if the worker is a radiologist analyzing medical images, a senior quality control stitching inspector in a garment factory, an agricultural worker tea leaf picker, or an articulated forklift operator picking orders from tall racking. Safety, productivity, and business integrity depend on clear and accurate vision. In 2023 the International Labour Organization published a report Eye Health & World of Work. In 2020, approximately 13 million working-age people were living with vision impairment of occupational origin. This places work-related vision impairments as the third largest causal factor of vision-related conditions. Eye Health & World of Work contains appendices on the hierarchy of controls and the main NIR, mechanical, chemical and ergonomic hazards to the eyes which all OEHS professionals are trained in. Based on Eye Health & World of Work, today’s presentation concentrates on the prevention programme for protecting vision (including in the aging work force), and interdisciplinary collaboration between the OEHS and Eye Health Medical professions through Health Promotion Campaigns. The presentation also explains the role of the ILO, a tripartite body of the United Nationals Organization (UNO). Biography Laurence Svirchev, CIH, has a 40 year career in Occupational Health and Safety. He holds an MA in Disaster and Emergency Management from Royal Roads University and a BSc in Occupational Health and Safety from the Montana School of Mines. He spent a decade in Occupational Epidemiology at the BC Canada Cancer Agency (Canada), fifteen years at WorkSafeBC as an Occupational Hygiene Officer and Fatalities Investigations. Since 2010, he has worked as Hygiene-Safety-Environment-Social Manager for Chinese international infrastructure construction companies in China, Indonesia, Fiji, and the Niger Sahel region of Africa.
