Partnering with AI: Lessons Learned from a Year of Collaborating with ChatGPT in Industrial Hygiene Practice

Presentation Brief

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT are rapidly changing how information is created, refined, and communicated within occupational health and safety. This presentation explores practical, real-world examples of how AI can enhance, but never replace professional judgement in industrial hygiene practice.

Through demonstrations and case-based discussion, this presentation highlights how AI can support IH workflows by drafting sampling methodologies, summarizing toxicological and regulatory information, generating control recommendations, and improving efficiency in report development. The session also examines common “AI fails” and how to apply AIHA’s technical guidance framework to ensure ethical, transparent, and defensible use of AI technologies.

Attendees will leave with actionable insights on how to responsibly integrate AI into their own workflows to enhance productivity and innovation while preserving rigor that defines the industrial hygiene profession.
